BOAT PEOPLE – HOW BIG IS THE PROBLEM?
Did you know that over 95% of illegal immigrants in Australia arrive on airplanes?
This raises the question, why do the government and media focus so much attention on the less than 5% of people that arrive on boats?
Kristina C, member of the newly founded political party DART, says “The victimization of asylum seekers who come to Australia in boats must be investigated. These people are not a serious threat, so are they being treated as criminals? Our aim is to stop them from being used as political tools and red herrings.”
DART, or the Detainee Awareness Rights Team, is a group seeking to raise awareness towards the plight of illegal immigrants who risk their lives in generally unsafe, unsanitary, and uncomfortable boats to try to find a better life in Australia.
“We need to address the real issues surrounding these people, not just the hype presented in the general media,” says Kristina. “These are our fellow human beings who have given up everything to find a better life. But because they are from poor, war-torn countries, they are vilified when they arrive. Let’s look at the reasons behind why they’re being used to generate fear, and what can be done to educate people about the actual facts and stories surrounding this issue.”
DART is calling on anyone that is willing to help give these desperate people a voice in the media. DART’s platform is to raise awareness of the boat people’s background, their escape, their dreams, and the impact that arriving in Australia is having on their lives.
If you would like to help raise awareness of the boat people’s real situation, go to dartparty.blogspot.com see what opportunities are available to get them humanity and the chance we all been lucky enough to have had.
